The Best Home Improvement to Increase the Value of Your Home

Share

A loft conversion is a great way to add space, and value, to your home.

The single best investment you can undertake if you want to increase the value of your property is usually a loft conversion. With prices beginning at around £15,000 to create a single room in an attic, a good loft conversion costs in the region of £500-£600 per m2 for space alone without any fixtures and fittings, but you can expect to add significantly more than that onto the value of your house.

As you would expect, there are quite a few different types of loft conversion, each with its pros and cons, and varying price tags. The easiest and most economical loft conversion, of course, is to reinforce the floor, put in a window or two and create access with stairs. After that things begin to get interesting, you could go for a dormer conversion, hip-to-gable, or Mansard (click the links for more information). Each comes with different pros and cons, some need planning permission while others don’t, and of course, each has a different price tag and regulations.

If you want to increase the value of your property but you don’t want a loft conversion, there are plenty of other things you can do.

Updating your central heating and making improvements to energy efficiency are also very good options to increase the value of your home, and for those looking for an even more environmentally friendly option, you might consider installing a green roof. This is often the second most effective way to boost the value of your property, after a loft conversion, adding around £8000 on average.
